What is Dystonia?
Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder which may affect anyone at any age.
It is characterised by involuntary muscle contractions which force certain parts of the body into abnormal, sometimes painful, movements or postures.
Dystonia can affect any part of the body including the arms and legs, trunk, neck, eyelids, face, or vocal cords.
Who we are
The Irish Dystonia Research Group is a team of neurologists and laboratory based scientists working together to find the cause, or causes, of adult onset dystonia. We aim both to discover genes that cause adult onset primary tortion dystonia and to understand the mechanisms of this form of dystonia and thus eventually new treatments.
Our research projects
Since 2013 we have embarked on a wide range of research projects. Our projects rely on the fantastic support and involvement of both patients and their relatives. Through this website we will share and explain our project work.
Our published research
We have published widely on this disorder. Through our website we aim to make our research output widely available and explain our findings.
Our Partners
We are working with our partners to research the causes and treatments of dystonia and increase awareness of this disorder in Ireland, in Europe and worldwide.
